According to a recent article posted by the Star Herald, a 2014 Nielsen Digital Consumer Report says Americans now own four digital devices on average, and the average U.S. consumer spends 60 hours a week consuming content across devices.

“We saw it coming on about 10 to 15 years ago…staring down at your cell phone, tablet or other electronic device can result in irritation to tissues, nerves and/or joints and can cause inflammation,” says Henri Prieels, Physical Therapy manager at Regional West.

Physical Therapy helps to manage the problems that arise with “Text Neck!”

Prieels suggests “looking at electronic devices with your head up and shoulders pulled back in the neutral spine position and avoiding moving your head forward for long periods of time” in order to prevent repetitive strain injury.

Grace Walker, physical and occupational therapist agrees! If you are experiencing neck pain from using such electronic device, pay attention to these helpful tips formulated by Dr. Walker and her knowledgeable staff:

  • Do use a hot pack or ice pack beore bed.
  • Do check pillow height and type, feather (not down) pillows are the best.
  • Don’t sit for more than 20 minutes at a time.
  • Don’t look up or down for more than 2 minute durations.
  • Don’t hold your breath during exertion.

If you are experiencing prolonged or intense neck pain, call right away to schedule an appointment with a trained and experienced therapist!
